Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee stopped in Abilene today and met with the media before speaking at a fundraising luncheon. He repeated his reasons for defending Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk recently jailed for not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

"She’s operating under Kentucky law, which is by the way the law under which she was elected and the Kentucky by 75 percent of the voters, by constitutional amendment is that marriage is one man, one woman," Huckabee says.

Huckabee says the fundamental question is whether or not the courts can make law.

“We have precedent that was enumerated by Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, Lincoln, Jackson, who said if you let the courts begin to legislate and you surrender to a legislative body in the judicial branch then you have surrendered to judicial tyranny," Huckabee says. "The issue is whether or not this country is going to abandon its separation of powers and have three equal branches of government or will we have a supreme branch that rules over the other two because if that happens, which is what is happening in America, we have destroyed our constitutional system of government.”

In the final minutes of Huckabee’s address to the media, several of the luncheon guests peek out to listen in and offer words of support to the former Arkansas governor.
