Discovery Adventure Theater presents The Scopes “Monkey Trial” 100 Years Later

Discovery Adventure Theater presents The Scopes “Monkey Trial” 100 Years Later

July 10-12, 1925, in the sleepy little town of Dayton, Tennessee, a showdown occurred between William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow. Dubbed the “Scopes Monkey Trial,” the case was a test of the Tennessee Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of any theory that denied the biblical account of creation in public schools. Although defendant John Scopes was found guilty of violating the law, the case called into question whether science or religion should take precedence in public education. Hollywood later memorialized the trial through the screenplay, Inherit the Wind, which is still shown in some schools today.

In observance of the 100th anniversary of the Scopes Trial, the Discovery Center Creation Museum will be showing a film about the trial and the movie. Join us Thursday, August 7, 7:00-8:30 PM, when the Discovery Adventure Theater will present Inherently Wind, a critique of the trial and movie by the late Dr. David Menton. Learn what the trial was all about, what really happened, how the play and movie got it wrong and why it matters to us today.

Doors open at 6:30 PM; the video starts at 7:00. Admission is by donation; free popcorn and water are provided. The Discovery Center is located at 810 Butternut Street in Abilene, Texas.
