As of December 31, 2019, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of Texas correctional authorities was 158,429 located in 61 state prisons and held in the custody of private prisons or local jails. State-operated facilities had a staff of 35,000 employees and a budget of $3,287,273,079.

The Community Corrections System

As of December 31, 2019, Texas's community corrections population was 367,753 under probation and 109,159 under parole.
