Obsidian Theater Company, founded by Riley Arnold, opens its first-ever production this month with the musical The Prom—a show that Arnold says reflects the company’s mission to provide a “safe atmosphere” for creativity, personal growth, and community dialogue.
Arnold, who serves as executive director, producer, and stage manager for the company, launched Obsidian as part of her master’s program in performing arts leadership at Shenandoah University. What began as an academic assignment has since grown into a nonprofit organization with a board of eight and a clear vision.

“I found this quote that said, ‘Obsidian is a sword against negative energy and a powerful anchor for keeping you grounded in life,’” Arnold said. “For me, theater has always been the thing that’s saved me or kept me grounded amidst the chaos of life… so the name just hit the mark.”
Arnold said the idea quickly gained traction after she pitched it to mentors and friends. “Everybody I mentioned it to—even just in passing said, ‘That sounds so cool. What is it?’” she said. “It was very affirming and reassuring that this could be a thing we could build on as a community.”
Obsidian’s first production, The Prom, tells the story of four eccentric Broadway stars who descend on a conservative town to support a high school student banned from bringing her girlfriend to prom. The show is known for its humor, heart, and inclusive themes.
“The story has so many themes that challenge mindsets and perspectives,” Arnold said. “Hopefully it creates a willingness and a want to have conversations—in the atmosphere of growing and learning together.” Arnold hopes Obsidian will fill a gap in Abilene’s arts scene, especially for adults. “There are a lot of fantastic opportunities for children in the theater community,” she said, “but there’s not a ton for adults. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or someone who’s never done theater before, we want to create a welcoming space.”
The cast of The Prom includes several first-time performers, “Watching them grow and be enveloped in that atmosphere has been so great to witness,” Arnold said. “As adults, we sometimes feel like we don’t have any more space to grow, but this show challenges the cast, the crew, and the audience.”
Arnold encourages potential attendees to research the show ahead of time, “If it’s your cup of tea, you’re going to love it,” she said. “But I always tell people to do their research so they know what they’re getting into.”
The show runs July 24th through the 26th, and tickets are available at obsidian.booktix.com.
