ArtWalk features new program, "ArtRap"

Collegiate art is on display at the Center for Contemporary Arts during this month's ArtWalk.

“Collegiate Candescence” is the theme for February’s ArtWalk.

Bird Thomas, The Curator of Fun Learning Experiences for The Center for Contemporary Arts, says this month’s theme highlights collegiate artists from all local colleges and universities.

"We’ve got the brightest and the boldest of all the light bulbs in the box going to our local universities and they are pretty much a bright spot in our community," Thomas says. "They are artists, they are poets, they are actors they are dancers and we love the idea of being able to share them with the rest of the community."

She says a lot of the time college students can be isolated onto their own campuses but this month's ArtWalk is designed to bring them downtown.

The urban dance company will perform, there will be a forum to discuss updates on the city’s bicycle plan and a new program starts this month that gives artists a chance to talk about what contemporary art means to them.

"We’re kicking off a new program here at the center that we’re calling, ArtRap," Thomas says. "It’s designed to engage the university students in sharing their ideas with community members and artist members from here at the center."

Thomas says people can discuss topics including racism, culture, censorship and sexuality, and everything else that makes contemporary art "contemporary."

"We’re going to get the college kids views on what it is like to work these into their art," Thomas says.
