Community Baby Shower To Provide For Local Families

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church members are looking to restock their shelves for baby needs.

The Baby Room ministry is organizing a community baby shower tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Abilene Woman’s Club on 3425 S.14th St.

St. Mark’s Deacon Peggy Valentine said they are accepting any donations for baby care, clothing and food.

“Larger items can be used, they don’t necessarily need to be new, they can be used. We are willing to accept any items donated,” Valentine said.

The Baby Room has been serving the Abilene community since 2008 providing baby care to 2,000 families. Valentine said the organization is the only one in Abilene dedicated to fully providing for children. The service started with purchasing their own inventory but now is sustainable on grants and donations from the community.

Some of the volunteers’ who work in the Baby Room have children who benefited from this service.

“In fact, one of our volunteers came in as a client and her children, her twin boys, when they were old enough, she came back and has been an awesome volunteer for us and her boys are here and they are a joy to have around,” Valentine said.

Volunteer Alex Vazquez was sorting donations while her twin boys are playing in the baby room on Wednesday. Vazquez has been working at the Baby Room for three years.

“I like to talk to the people coming in, to hear them, and to see the babies. I like to see the people left with a smile on their face,” she said.

Another volunteer, Linda Bratton, is organizing clothing for babies as she sorts them with hangers.

“I think its really needed and we keep getting more and more customers all the time which we are glad to be able to help all the time,” Bratton said.

The Baby Room provides its services at Saint Mark’s Episcopal every Wednesday to families with babies in need. For more information on the Baby Room ministry, contact St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at info@stmarksabilene.org.
