Gallery: 16 de Septiembre Parade kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month in Abilene

The parade took place at 6:00 p.m on Vogel Avenue and made its way to Arthur Sears Park. The festivities celebrate Mexico's independence from Spain in 1810.

Many businesses and organizations participated in the parade, Sylvia Leal, an active member of the community and former Honorary Commander for the 317th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron was this year’s parade marshal.

Aida Pantoja, the organizer of the event, says events like this are important to celebrate cultures of the people who make up Abilene.
