Members of community celebrate Juneteenth

The rain was pouring Saturday afternoon, but that didn’t stop members of the Abilene community from coming out to celebrate Juneteenth at Stevenson Park.

The community enjoyed food, live entertainment, and a kickball game with the Abilene Police Department.

Event coordinator and Board member of Let Us Breathe, Emily Day said the holiday sets aside time to teach history and celebrate, “It’s just a monumental day for us, it’s always been a monumental day for us and now we get to have it be a historical day, represented as a day off as well for people. Just to basically show people we are here, we love the community and let's just celebrate life.”

JaQuan Ward and his daughter Avery were helping out their family business at the event. JaQuan shared that he liked the music, but loves showing his kids what this day is all about, “The big thing is I get to bring my daughter and just show her what everythings about on Juneteenth.”

On Sunday, many families joined in on the dads versus kids football game and the fun continued today as the weekend’s planned events wrapped up the celebration of Emancipation Day.
