Abilene Zoo celebrates World Giraffe Day

The Abilene Zoo joined in the celebration of World Giraffe Day over the weekend. Marketing supervisor at the Abilene Zoo Catherine Brown says giraffes are in danger of losing their habitats. There is only one giraffe for every four elephants on the African continent. To help conservation efforts, the Abilene Zoo hosted a day full of yoga on the Giraffe terrace, keeper talks, and brick building. "My favorite part about World Giraffe Day is absolutely seeing our young guests meet giraffes up close, get a chance to feed them, and learn about this incredible species,” Brown said.

Artist David Reynaud made a special brick set of a giraffe just for this event. Families gathered to create not only a toy giraffe but memories as well. 4-year-old Nova came all the way from Lubbock to say hi to her favorite animals. She told us her favorite is a giraffe, which she calls, "A burahfee”

The Abilene Zoo donates proceeds from the World Giraffe Day event to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, one of many programs that the Abilene Zoo supports.
