State’s Democrats pick Allred to face Cruz in November

In Texas, Congressman Colin Allred has won the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate. Allred will now face Republican Senator Ted Cruz in the November general election.

In his victory speech, Congressman Colin Allred says Texas cannot afford to have Senator Ted Cruz in office anymore. Allred says the November election will be about abortion and voting rights, freedoms, he says, are under attack.

Meanwhile, Cruz said he’s the candidate who would fight the “radical left who threaten to change what makes this (TEXAS) great.”

Roland Gutierrez, a state senator whose district stretches from San Antonio to Uvalde, has been a strong advocate for gun reform since the Robb Elementary School shooting in 2022. In the concession speech he gave standing in front of families from Uvalde, Gutierrez said he wasn’t finished, despite the loss, “I stopped crying about elections a long time ago. You won’t see me cry over the next. We’ve got a fight still yet to go in this state and we’re gonna make sure we do that. But I cry every day over their children.”

And Gutierrez said he’s not done fighting for gun reform, “And yes, the principal reason for my running was these families behind me and their children. I’m telling you right here right now, just like I talked to the congressman earlier, we need an assault weapons ban in this country.”

Allred will now face Cruz in November in one of the only U.S. Senate races where Democrats have even the slimmest chance of flipping a Republican seat as they attempt to retain control of the Senate. But, Allred faces an uphill battle. First, Senator Cruz is popular among Republicans. He had a tough reelection in 2018, but polls show him leading Allred in a one-on-one race. Add to that: history. The last time Texans elected a Democrat to serve in the U.S. Senate was in 1988.
