The clinic, spearheaded by the Avans Group, a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business, represents a significant expansion of healthcare services for the area’s veteran population. Once completed, the facility will offer advanced medical equipment and telehealth capabilities, bringing specialized care closer to home for veterans who have historically faced long travel times to access similar services.
“This clinic isn’t just a building; it’s a lifeline,” said Luke Orander, founder and CEO of the Avans Group. “Abilene holds a special place in my heart, and being able to build a clinic that will directly serve the veterans of this community is the honor of a lifetime.”
The state-of-the-art facility will provide expanded medical and mental health services. With a focus on addressing critical issues like veteran suicides, the clinic aims to offer timely care and support that can save lives.
“This facility means so much to Abilene,” said Mayor Weldon Hurt during the ceremony. “It’s not just about providing care, it’s about honoring the sacrifices of our veterans by ensuring they receive the services they deserve.”
The clinic will also have a significant economic and social impact on Abilene. It is expected to create jobs during its construction phase and long-term positions in healthcare and operations once it opens. Moreover, it is set to become a cornerstone of the community, providing a hub for services and outreach that will support the well-being of local veterans.
The project has garnered widespread support, including from the Texas Veterans Commission and the offices of Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Jodey Arrington, whose representatives attended the event.
“The Abilene VA clinic represents care, compassion, and commitment to our nation’s veterans,” Aranda said. “This is a legacy project, and we are proud to build a facility that will make a real difference in this community.” Veterans in West Texas have long sought better access to care, and the new clinic’s location in Abilene will reduce travel burdens for many.
As construction begins, the Evans Group has committed to completing the clinic “on time and under budget”. The facility is slated to open in late 2025, marking a new era of care and support for Abilene’s veteran community.
