Two Abilene choirs are set to take the stage at one of the nation’s premier music education events.

The Abilene Christian University A Cappella Chorus and Taylor Elementary Choir will perform this week at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention, a gathering that attracts more than 30,000 attendees, including 10,000 music educators.

For ACU’s A Cappella Chorus, this marks its first TMEA performance in more than 40 years. Jeff Goolsby, director of choral studies at ACU, said the invitation is a testament to the choir’s dedication. “The expectation is to perform at a very high level at TMEA,” Goolsby said. “We’ve had additional rehearsals and worked with guest clinicians to prepare.”

The choir will present a culturally rich program featuring composers from Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American traditions, including a piece by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer and a world premiere by Josh Rodriguez.

Taylor Elementary Choir is making history with its first-ever TMEA invitation. Founded in 1963, the choir has had only two directors in its history, with Terry Graham leading since 1990. Clay Johnson, executive director of fine arts for Abilene ISD, said the selection process was highly competitive. “They rehearse, stay after school, and record a professional-level audition,” Johnson said. “Taylor was one of only four elementary ensembles chosen in the entire state.”

Beyond the performance, students will have the opportunity to connect with music educators and professionals, an experience that could shape their future in music.
