Wylie Jr High student wins third consecutive spelling bee

On Saturday, 24 students from around the Big Country competed in a spelling bee to determine who would attend this year's National bee in D.C.

Sariah Thomas, from Wylie West Junior High, is the winner of this year's Big Country Spelling Bee, going through eight rounds before eventually winning with the word planisphere.

This is the third year in a row that Titus has won this spelling bee and had the opportunity to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in D.C. She plans on preparing for nationals in a different way than she has in the past, "I just try and push myself to do my best. I usually study I like writing down words but it doesn’t really help so I’m going to try a new strategy this year and I use a computer dictionary and listen to the word.”

On top of the trip to D.C. which is fully funded, Titus will also receive the Samuel Louis Sugerman Award, an online subscription to Merriam-Webster unabridged, a subscription to Britannica, and a 2025 U.S. Mint Proof Set of coins.

Marleigh Guelker from Sweetwater Middle School received the second-place trophy.
