The full week containing September 22nd is referred to a Tolkien week.
Celebrations throughout the country include, rereading The Lord of the Rings Trilogy or having a full day movie marathon along with the seven traditional hobbit meals.
The Swenson House’s third Hobbit Day Celebration gave fans a chance to enjoy festivities with a costume contest, photo ops, and vendors with hobbit themed goods or activities—all accompanied by music from the movies which carried through the Swenson House Gardens.
The idea to create a local celebration originated with Treasurer of the Swenson House Historical Society, Shannon Odom.
“We thought this would be a really neat way to highlight the gardens here at this once in house, because hobbits love gardens and with Abilene being such a literary town, with the colleges, we thought this would really connect with people,” said Odom.
Visitors of the event enjoyed the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fantasy of the books they love.
Hobbit Day is Tuesday — September 22nd marks the fictional birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
