For Elizabeth Wagstaff, the answer is as simple as going back to the Constitution.
“The most important issue to me is preserving and protecting our constitutional freedoms. I really see that on the ballot this year,” said Wagstaff.
Many Texas voters have told pollsters that data centers, increased property taxes, and questions of education or border security are top of mind. But many voters, including Lupe Wolf, outside Taylor County’s election headquarters were concerned with a different kind of issue.
“I’m concerned about Trump trying to be an authoritarian. As far as voting, all these republicans, it’s just like voting for Trump because whatever Trump tells them to do they’ll do. If you voted for any republican you’re voting for Trump. So we voted for democrats all the way,” said Wolf.
That’s unusual in a county that usually sees the Republicans win with around 80-percent of the vote.
But Sam O’Sheilds also said his vote aims to limit President Trump’s influence on Capitol Hill.
“And I don’t agree with Paxton at all. He’s corrupt and we need to get that out of Washington. I don’t want another lackey running around with Trump and his cronies,” said O’Sheilds.
Early voting continues this week, with expanded hours at all six of Taylor County’s polling locations. Election Day is next Tuesday, November 3rd.
