Citing a decline in sales tax revenue and a continued economic slowdown, city officials are proposing more than $11 million in belt-tightening measures to the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The two biggest moves have caused some grumbling from residents. A hiring freeze would save more than $1.5 million, and plans to demolish and renovate two recreation centers at the same time would save another million.

KACU’s Heather Claborn spoke with Abilene City Manager Robert Hanna about the city’s economic position and the proposals the Abilene City Council will consider in meetings that start Monday.
